High School Musical 2 - 17.24 million viewers
August 19, 2007
In case you’ve no teens or tweens, Disney has just followed up the wildly successful, “High School Musical” with part deux, “High School Musical 2“. The success of “High School Musical” is evident after many high schools around the country have put on their own production of the musical. For us Generation-X and Generation-Y folks, High School Musical is our “Grease“, which is meant to break down the barriers of ‘cliques” in school and peer groups. in my opinion, High School Musical 2 falls a bit short compared to its parent in its play to pull on the heartstrings of youth with well placed product placement and catchy songs. That said, it’s opening song, “What Time Is It? summertime!” rings true to kids far and wide. The tweens and teens are already heralding HSM2 as better than the first, according to NPR.
Wikipedia has the high school musical debut breaking records as the most watched cable telecast in history (the previous record was held by ESPN’s debut of Monday Night Football on September 23, 2006, which attracted 16 million viewers. Amazing.
